JD 2012 Battle Reports/ Tournament Review

So! Bishop back at the front of this event after sitting it out for the last couple of years. JD ran as smoothly as ever, even being the first major 6th ed 40k tourney.

I rocked up a little late and missed the first mission breifing, but it was okay, cause no matter what the mission was, I was planning on losing the first game considering i've played all of 2 or 3 games excluding JD.

I drew Ben Zagami first, and I like to think i contributed to him winning the event :)

My list for the day was as follows:

Coteaz

10 Strike Knights w/2 Psycannons, Psybolts and a Hammer

11 Warrior Acolytes with stormbolters and a mystic
Razorback with psybolts

Dreadnought w/2 TLAC, Psybolts

Dreadnought w/2 TLAC, Psybolts.

Ben was running a necron list with lots of tricks... It's not worth listing, cause it was irrelevant, he had guns and they killed things.

So, I had no real clue how to play it, I shot stuff at his transport and eventually killed it, but his destroyer lord ran full steam at coteaz, challenged him and killed him without so much as taking a wound. The rest of the warrior acolytes piled around and were killed soon after.

My shooting proved ineffective during this game, everything i killed stood back up. -_-

His shooting, on the other hand, destroyed the grey knight squad in a single turn, leaving me with 2 dreads to shoot his lord, and eventually punch on. I managed one bonus point when a dreadnought punched the destroyer lord in the face, but took a loss the first round 20-6.

My second game was against a grey knight list which consisted of an inquisitor with grenades, 7 terminators, 10 strike knights with the same kit out as mine and a psyflemen.

I deployed defensively, then seized the initiative, allowing my dreadnought to take out his, and put the rest of my army to work on his terminators.

Turn 2 involved minimal damage to my strike knights before i completely destroyed his terminators and took a chunk out of his grey knight strike squad, my strike knights fell back, then failed at the start of my turn 3 and fell back again, ultimately denying me a bonus point for not getting them into his deployment zone.

I tabled him on turn 4. It wasnt a very fair game in all honesty, seize is ruthless in 750pts, but he took it like a champ, it was a great game.

Third up was the tyranid warrior goodness of Tom Nurse. He was running 2 Primes, 4 hive guard and 2 squads of warriors. I felt pretty confident coming into this game as my autocannons can instakill the warriors.

He deployed in a blob so his venomthrope would give cover to the whole army. I spent my first turn shooting the hive guard and managed ot kill 3 out of the 4 of them, his first turn was just moving closer ot me to try and get the charge off.

In my second turn i finished off the hiveguard and started shooting the warriors, i killed one of the units except the prime, and the other unit charged into coteaz and the strike knights. The prime challenged coteaz and tore him up pretty eaily, while the strike knights and warriors punched on. After a long winded combat the 2 dreads walked in to tie up the prime and eventually kill him, while the warrior acolytes and razorback killed the second prime allowing me to table him and take the 19-5 win.

My fourth and final game was against Mark's eldar which consisted of a farseer with guardians, some dark reapers in a bastion, a fire prism and some jetbikes.

Theres nothing more to say than that i rolled terribly and Mark rolled like an absolute god D:

He seized the initiative on me and proceeded to kill my razorback and dreadnought in turn one, both from single shots. The damage roll on the razorback also killed some of the grey knights had combat squadded inside. The dark reapers proceeded to destroy one of the GK combat squads. My first turn involved all of my shooting missing. YAY :D

We had a heated discussion about dark reapers being able to be guided while inside the bastion, and it was allowed by the TO, which i sadly only found the page reference for later to show it doesn't work. (Page 67 btw)

The game was basically over after that turn, but hey, to keep it going his fire  prisms single shot penetrated and rolled a 6 vs my second dread, which ended up leaving 3 pens and 3 dead tanks on my side of the board. From here there was little i could do. I was tabled on turn 4.

Result: Loss 5-20

I scored an 18 for paint and perfect 20 for comp, allowing me to place 14th overall.

Overall JD was a great event once again, got to catch up with some friends I havent seen in a while and roll some dice. will be back next year for sure! :)

Terracon: My thoughts!

TERRACON 2012

So! After 2 years of various life interferences with me making the trek over to Naracoorte, in 2012, I finally had the green light to visit the famous Terracon :D

Difsta, Capt.Sparrow and Paddlepop Lion and I piled into our car for the 6 hour trip from Melbourne to     Naracoorte... It seemed like it was going to get old quickly, but the ride seemed dramatically shorter than it did on the way back.

When we arrived we checked in to our accomodation and hit the pub, meeting up with a couple of the South Australian guys. Watching DAMAGE go badass on punk kids was quite entertaining :)

So, Now would be a good time to post my list i suppose, It's slightly different to the one I posted earlier.

This army is the king of 24" firepower, so much dakka at range, seemed like it would punish anything that wasnt mech.

One glaring weakness with the list is the lack of any way to deal with AV14, and while I hoped it wouldnt pop up too often, i managed to play 2 armies with landraiders, both containing a deathstar that would easily have been shot at...not so easily assaulted :P

We rocked up to the town hall at around 8.30 on the saturday morning...I wasn't too hungover and was keen to get stuck into some 40kays, all be it, with an army I had yet to play a game with!

Venue was pretty good, same old town hall for those who'd been there before...Walking distance to...well, everything, it's naracoorte...

Game 1: Objectives, Retarded Deployment, VS Craig: Grey Knights

Craig is one of the melbourne guys who came up, top bloke, always a good game. Neither of us had played our armies before and we both forgot lots of special rules, it was a fun game :P

He had a similar list to mine, 20 Strikes, Interceptors, a dreadknight, dreadnought and grandmaster.

My alpha strike came down turn two and wiped a unit off  the board, and did significant damage to another one, the game revolved around a central combat involving his interceptors, strike knights, grand master and units of my strike knights and interceptors. The winner of the combat was essentially the winner of the game. I took it out and won the game.

Result: 18-5 Victory

Game 2: Kill Points, 12" Deployment, VS Mark: Necrons

My first game against a South Australian :D Mark was a nice guy and we had a fun game, the mission favoured my army heavily as i was able to select his tomb spyder as my secret killpoint and collect 4 points for it when it died second turn. Among his other units were the two special characters which grant abilities and remove them from my units, aswell as 30 immortals, deathmarks and a barge.

My alpha strike proved too strong again, removing 3 units from the board when I came down. I proceeded to destroy a number of small units as the game progressed. He used his veil which scattered off the board, losing a 300 odd point unit, as well as another unit of similar value failing on ld10 and running 12" off the board.

Result: 19-5 Victory

Game 3: Bean Counters, Table Quarters, VS Neil: Space Wolves

So after winning 2 games, I get to play against some of the serious competition for the event. I've never played Neil before, but being a regular gaming buddy with a number of the Vic ATC players, I've heard his name pop up, as well as seeing him on wargamer here and there. Neil's space wolf list was solid and his army was much stronger in a bean counter mission like this one.

I played the mission wrong and thats all there is to it. I tried to deepstrike but Njal hooded one of my communions and half my shit didnt come on :(

I needed to deploy on the board against him to utilise turn 1 shunt on the interceptors and i failed to realise this. I struggled for bonus points, but in the end, went down.

Result: 5-19 Loss

At the conclusion of day 1 i was 39 from 60, and feeling alright. It was time t hit the bar and other shenanigans :D

Game 4: Scalps, 12" Depoyment, VS Josh: Grey Knights.

Josh is one of the guys I came up in the car with, and we'd had extensive discussions about our lists on the 6 hour drive up to Naracoorte. It was the general consensus between he and myself that my list was stronger.

I didnt do anything differently to what i should have during turns 1 and 2 when i deployed, however losing 2 killpoints to a fleeing ld10 unit really does hurt. Similarly, I managed to shoot down his strike knights, make them flee for 2 turns successively and have them regroup only 1-3" from the board edge.

I used my interceptors in deepstrike to bait out his landraider and deathcults with coteaz, with the mindset that he'd trade 1killpoint in killing the interceptors for the 2 and possible third (land raider) I'd get from shooting 2 squads of strikes  and assaulting the remainders into the deathcults.

My dreadnoughts were effective at de-meching, destroying a razorback and Josh's dreadnought, as wel as the chimera late game.

My shooting prooved ineffective and sanctuary killed 2 guys on the charge. One unit was out of range by an inch and this basically lost me the combat.

I was up 4-2 KP on turn 5, we rolled to continue, did so, and i ended up losing the game 2-4.

Result: 5-19 Loss

Game 5: BOB! 12" Deployment, VS Chris, Spacemarines.

Last game was capture Bob! the moving objective

I deployed my entire army on the board wiht the exception of the interceptors who were to deepstrike on my mystic turn 2. I played the game very systematicllly, shootingthe units on one half of the board until they died, then focusing on the other half.

Chris' deathstar, in the assault terminators in the landraider, exited on turn 4 when nothing, except the landraider itself was left. They took bob and ran into their deployment zne before being met by my remaining firepower. 2 squads of GK's charged in, and over 2 turns, won the combat, consolidated, and charged an immoblised landspeeder in my deployment zone, winning me the game.

Result: 18-5 Victory

Overall, I was happy with the way i performed, although dissatisfied about my performance in game 3, I felt that I played all other 4 missions the way they were meant to be played by my army. It was a learning experience for me, and, while this army may not be making an immediate return to the tabletop, A similar one using a librarian and coteaz may be used in the near future, depending on comp weighting, possibly eastcon.

Till next time

Relevant Scoring At Terracon 2012

Score Breakdown At Terracon 2012

Just going to do a quick math on the relevance of comp battle etc at Terracon, so the raw % breakdown for each set of criteria!

Battle points
5 games each worth 20 points = 100 points

Sportsmanship
5 games each worth 10 points = 50 points

Army Handicap
A score out of 60 = 60 points

Painting
A score out of 20 = 20 points

Total
230 points
This gives us a raw breakdown of:
Battle: 100/230 =  43.47%
Sports: 50/230   = 21.73%
Composition: 60/230 = 26.08%
Paint: 20/230 = 8.69%

Overall, it seems like a very soft score oriented event with non battle results counting for a total of 56% of your total score. However, when we take into account minimum scoring, we get a breakdown which looks more like the following...

Battle: Between 5-20 Points: Therefore a minimum of 25 will be obtained.
Sports: Between 2-10 Points. Therefore a minimum of 10 can be obtained.
Composition: Between 12-60 Points. A minimum of 12 can be obtained.
Paint: Entirely relevant. 0-20 points can be obtained.

This means, everyone starts with a score of 47/230. Irrelevant of other factors.

Relevant Battle: 75/183:  40.9%
Relevant Sports: 40/183: 21.85%
Relevant Composition: 48/183: 26.22%
Relevant Paint: 20/183 = 10.92%

Overall, this changes very little. paint becomes slightly more important than it did before accounting for 10% of your score while battle becomes devalued even more. Composition is worth quite a big chunk of your total through both raw score and relevant score.
